Tackling the winter blues

Tackling the winter blues

So nice to wake up to a bright sunny day today! With the nights drawing in and a particularly wet and dull autumn I’ve been reflecting on the extent to which this affects my and my clients’ motivation and mental energy. We seem to have a plethora of aids out there to protect us physically from the winter months, but not so much to keep us psychologically strong.

Personally, I try to get outside during the day as much as possible (having a dog to walk definitely helps) but maybe we also just need to be a little kinder to ourselves at this time of year. With the approach of Christmas and the end of the year, life can get very busy and we can also find ourselves reflecting on all the things we feel we should have done in the year but didn’t.

As a coach I find, particularly at this time of the year, clients coming to me mentally drained. We feel that pressure to get everything wrapped up before the end of the year – wrapped up professionally and personally! We really do need to be working at full strength, but against this we are faced with shorter daylight hours and cold weather that naturally saps our energy, pulling us more towards hibernation mode that get up and go! Faced with this I encourage my clients to:

Slow down
Make the most of the day-light hours
Reflect on all your achievements this year, and
Be kind to yourself.
