Want a happy workplace? The power of 3

Want a happy workplace? The power of 3

Neuroscience tells us about the power of 3. That is to maintain a happy working environment we need to have 3 positive interactions with our colleagues for every negative one (Rath and Clifton, 2004). These don't have to be big over-the-top gestures, a simple thank-you for sending a report over on time, commenting on a job well done or even a friendly smile. In fact, it's not simply saying the positive, it's actually noticing it more relative to the negative things that's important. That is, by thinking about the negative less often we can build resilience and improve our performance.

So try putting this into practise and start noticing more of the positive. A good habit to get into is making a gratitute diary, or noting down 3 good things that happened each day.

Interestingly the researchers also found that for a happy marriage the magic number was 5, but lets hope that at home the positive is easier to spot!
