Summary
Alternative data is a massively expanding category of unstructured data used for purposes other than originally intended. Quant investors were pioneers of using alternative sources to create alpha-generating trading algorithms. Before the big data revolution, alternative data sources included satellite images, ship movements or geolocation. As the amount of data available expands, the label has grown to include things like credit card transactions, social media feeds, the Internet-of-Things and web data like page views, job listings or inventory, among others. Alt data is used in conjunction with traditional market data or internal data to generate unique insights. Some types of alt data requires machine learning and artificial intelligence to be processed (i.e. natural language processing to measure sentiment from social media posts), while others can be analyzed with more traditional techniques.
