Maintaining Your Employer Brand Internally: Post…

In the last few months, many industries have been forced to make a large portion of their employees redundant, and whether this was done correctly can seriously affect the reputation of your company. There are many ways to recover from a negative experience with restructuring, learning how to manage your brand effectively is a key phase of recovery.

One factor we must consider is the legal perspective. In order to comply with legal requirements, ensure not to hire for the same role for 6 months post redundancy because you could be exposed to a possible unfair dismissal trail by previous employees. Utilise your remaining workforce where possible, but if you do hire someone new for a job of a similar nature ensure the job description/role differs to what it was before.

A great place to start when it comes to maintaining your brand is internally. Businesses must guarantee the continued relationship between employer and employees and create a pleasant work environment.

Here are some examples of how to do this successfully:

  • Utilise the workforce you have in place through succession planning and job sharing.
  • Employees communicate with each other, so make sure to reassure your remaining workforce of stability and a positive future in the company.
  • Transparency is crucial in the processes of change, make sure employees are aware of your plans via clear, concise and readily available policies.
  • Employee assistance programmes (EAP’s) offer employee benefits that provide your team with any support they may need, impacting their wellbeing and performance, especially considering the current situation.
  • Guarantee your managers are on board with your changes and allow them to suggest ideas of their own. Along with employees, managers will be aware what amendments are necessary to optimise employee/employer relations.
  • Request and act on feedback: Employee feedback should be considered by managers and utilized as a method for constructive change.
  • Champion employee advocacy: Sharing positive experiences within your company will enhance the interpersonal connection of your campaign, as well as provide your employees with a platform that allows their voice to be heard.
