Good enough is enough

Good enough is enough

Yesterday I bumped into a fellow mum whose daughter is going through the 11+ exams this week. Very stressed she told me about all the preparation she had gone through to prepare for this moment, tutoring, exam preparation, extra curricular activities etc etc. On my return home, as I marvelled at her parenting skills (and in comparison contemplated my own mediocrity) I started reading an article based on research by psychologist Baumeister and Tierney (see Jan 5th Sunday Times supplement).

In it they talk about how so many of us strive for perfection, but when it comes to raising happy kids (which arguably is what we all strive for as a parent) being good enough, or avoiding bad parental qualities, is what matters. The difference all those extra lessons and activities we run around taking our kids to, in terms of how happy they are, is relatively small. And what about the cost to ourselves of striving for perfection and the impact this has on those around us?

So whether you are a parent or not, in so many aspects of our lives when it really boils down to it, good enough is enough.
