You may or may not have heard of 21 Savage …..please feel free to google him or check out spotify for his music – at this point a warning that most of it carries a parental advisory tag so no offense – in advance.
Anyway, this isn’t a music review (LinkedIn is not the right medium for that) rather this is a tale of the importance of having the right documents to live and work legally in which ever country you reside – you could get found out like 21 Savage did.
Hot off the press this interesting young man with an eclectic taste in tattoos (de rigueur for any self-respecting rap star) is in a spot of bother with the US authorities as he is never attained American citizen having immigrated there as a minor.
It most definitely was not his fault as he was only 12 in 2005 when he moved to the US but he has rapped and waxed lyrically since his recently found fame that he hails from “the hood” in Atlanta etc.
I see this as a timely reminder to us as recruiters and the companies we recruit on behalf of that finding talent is important but of equal importance is making sure that compliance checks are consistent, timely and rigorous ensuring that our candidates have the right to live and work in the UK .
To be fair we now live in a world where proof of who you really are is a constant theme ….from walking into a bar , to buying a car and of course to getting a job.
Simultaneously let us not forget the sad fact that there are those who have the right of abode but cannot always to prove it.
