Cosmetic surgery regulation is back in the news today. After the PIP Breast Implant scare, the Health Secretary has requested a review into whether tighter regulation is needed. NHS Medical Director, Sir Bruce Keogh, will lead the inquiry. The review is intended to ascertain how those who choose to have Cosmetic Surgery may be better protected. It will look specifically into whether a national implant register should be implemented. I welcome this review. The number of people wishing to undergo Cosmetic Surgery continues to increase and in tough economic times, finding the cheapest procedure seems to trump ensuring that the Surgeon is fully trained and qualified. I hope that one of the recommendations from the review is imposition of stricter insurance requirements on practicing Surgeons. All too often I assist victims of botched Cosmetic Surgery procedures who attempt to bring Cosmetic Surgery Claims against their Surgeons only to find that they have insufficient insurance or no insurance at all. I hope the review can bring about safeguards that the Cosmetic Surgery industry desperately needs.
