HSE inspections are now taking place for manufacturing businesses where materials that contain silica a natural substance found in most stone, rocks, sand and clay are used.
This targeted inspection initiative is focusing on businesses that manufacture bricks and tiles and that carry out foundry activities. Inspectors are checking that duty holders know the risks associated with respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust and have effective controls in place protect their workers’ respiratory health.
Know the risks - exposure to RCS dust can occur when these materials are handled or processed. RCS dust can cause chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer and a lung condition called silicosis.
