Managing your own working environment.
If you are not happy with your working environment there are two ways to change it. You can either find a new employer or you can proactively change the situation you are in.
The first option is pretty obvious, but how do you do the second? The second is the professional equivalent of the suggestion box on the factory wall, or the suggestions tab on the company website.
Set down a dozen criteria that describe your ideal working environment such as teams, consultative, fast pace, no change, lots of systems. Now compare these criteria to your current environment and where they don't match, devise an intervention - something you can say to your line manager that, if it's taken up, will effect the desired change.
It doesn't always work, but when it does it feels like a "punch the air" moment. You have taken the first proactive step in managing your own working environment - and if you don't then someone else will - and their change may not be to your liking! #proteuscareermanagement
