• Practise the art of conversation

Here are 8 simple tips about conversational etiquette when meeting people for the first time.

Listen more than you talk.

Avoid closed questions.

At meetings come prepared with a mental list of topics.

Avoid religion, politics and sex!

Read people's personality styles and tailor your approach to suit.

Don't monopolise group conversations.

Don't interrupt.

Finally; avoid one-upmanship.  If you say, "I found the recent conference on energy conservation really fascinating," there is nothing quite as annoying as the response, "I was the main speaker at two such conferences recently."
