February, 2025 and I'd left my last corporate job with no real plan.
Just a need not to be in similar circumstances any time soon.
Although the market was, and is, pretty shite, I hadn't activated the 'doing' part of looking for a new role. It wasn't hard to see - if I'm honest - that I just wasn't ready to get back into the world of meetings, emails, actions, Slack pings and other joys.
I'll wait a little longer, I thought. Something will inspire me.
Having all that time and headspace to think was both a revelation and terrifying. I can honestly say that I had NEVER given this much thought to what I wanted to do for work.
That might sound bonkers to admit at 51 years old, having had, a decent and 'successful' enough, varied corporate career.
The reality is that I've slipped from role to role. As I grew more experienced and my network expanded, I was often invited into roles with a cursory 'interview chat', and I had a great time at most of these. If only for some of the ride or die friends I've made along the way.
Has it been conscious or thought through? Has it feck!
So back to early 2025. I had all this time. What do I REALLY like doing? I really like solving problems and talking to people. Any people. Hmmmm….put them together, Kate.
Building this business has been easy. I've wasted quite a bit of time and money on gurus and courses that weren't for me and didn't move me forward. You only find out what you don't know by making mistakes.
BUT - cheese incoming - the women that have trusted me with their time, problems, quests and money have changed me immeasurably. I've returned the favour of course, but what a joy.
Bloody long story short. It's rare that we give ourselves the time to fully pause and think about what WE want to do. We always have the every day constraints that we need to consider, like mortgages, bills, food, kids, pets and more.
That's not unimportant, but because you're the sort of woman you are, you will ALWAYS find a way to make it work.
We just need to find out what the 'IT' that you want to charge after is.
And you don't need permission to want something different, even when what you've got looks great on paper. Dissatisfied does NOT mean ungrateful.
