I go into them in detail in our leadership program, but I think you’ll find even a snapshot useful here;

1. Principles: these are universal laws that we all accept regardless of our background, experiences, religion etc. Principles are completely different to values. Everybody talks mainly about values when they are discussing leadership and this is flawed. Values only describe what we, as individuals provide importance to (such as money, family, time etc). The value concept is subjective as my values will be different to yours and your values will be different to somebody else’s. Principles are universal truths we all live by, such as integrity, fairness, authority, honesty. These are objective. The psychology segment that we cover in our leadership program refers to principles.

2. Perception: next, a good leader needs to understand their own interpretation of these principles in the application to the world of work. Our perception of these universal principles develop our values. Our emotional intelligence module that we cover in our leadership program refers to perception.

3. Practices: this is the strategic process of how we plan to implement processes that align with our perception and principles. I teach actual models and theories of behaviour that tie into the act of applying practices.

As you can see, there are many layers of effective leadership. It’s more than just teaching someone to act or behave in a certain way. Leadership starts from within.
