HMRC opens 300,762 self assessment investigations

Self employed individuals are being advised to complete their self assessment tax returns by the 31st January and to make sure that they are accurate, despite the tight deadline.

HMRC opened over 300,000 investigations into self assessment tax returns in the last year and the tax authority collected £1.2 billion in extra tax from investigations into self-assessment tax returns in 2018 / 2019.
