I used to work in Denmark and before returning to the UK my colleagues organised a leaving do for me, but one of my technicians, Ole Eriksen, couldn't attend.
Instead he wrote me a very flattering letter with the heading, "Fordi jeg ikke fik det sagt" (loosely translated as "because I didn't get to say it personally").
The leaving do was great and my focus switched to my new role in the UK.
Two months later I thought, "I must call Ole and thank him for his letter."
Eventually, 6 months after leaving Denmark, I called him and the person who answered said, "Oh, didn't you know, Ole died of leukemia three weeks ago!"
A salutary lesson that I shall never forget.
