I’ve been asked that numerous times by members of the public recently. Financial worries and the current economic climate certainly put a strain on modern day marriage and financial difficulties are often cited as one of the reasons for a divorce petition based on unreasonable behaviour.

To obtain a quick Divorce rather than wait until you have been Separated for 2 or 5 years, adultery or unreasonable behaviour must be cited. However a report by the Marriage Foundation concludes that there is “no evidence whatsoever” that recession increases or decreases the number of divorces.

Certainly financial worries put a huge strain on modern day marriage and are well known to cause further problems such as alcohol and drug dependency and depression. If one spouse loses their job the impact on Family life can be devastating.

However, divorce costs money and at a time when money is tight and legal aid has all but disappeared, couples may struggle on, especially when there isn’t the money to separate. That’s why we at Slater and Gordon have responded to these challenging times and launched our Fixed Price services for divorce and Financial Settlement. All our offices offer a free first appointment and we have 3 trained mediators who can meet with the couple together if they decide that they’d prefer to reach a settlement through Mediation.
