From Annual Goals to Daily Tasks: Connecting Your…

Setting ambitious annual goals is one thing. Making sure your team’s day-to-day work actually contributes to achieving them is another.

As businesses approach Q4, it is a good time to take a step back and look at how objectives are being translated into action. Are your teams working towards clearly defined outcomes, or are projects and tasks moving forward without a direct connection to the bigger picture?

Without a clear link between strategy and execution, even the best business goals can get lost in the day-to-day workload. Teams may be busy, deadlines may be met, and projects may be completed, but are those activities moving the business in the right direction?

The answer lies in creating a clear line of sight from your annual objectives right down to individual tasks. With a well-structured OKR framework and the right setup in monday.com, you can connect your business goals to the work happening across your organisation.

1. Start with the goal, then define what success looks like

Every effective plan starts with a clear objective. However, a broad ambition is not enough on its own. Your team needs to understand what success looks like and how progress will be measured.

For example, imagine your business wants to increase recurring revenue from £2 million to £2.6 million by December.

That is a clear ambition, but how will you know whether you are on track to achieve it?

This is where Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) come in. Your objective sets the direction, while your key results establish the measurable outcomes that indicate progress.

You might identify two or three key results that support your revenue target, each with a defined measure of success, a current figure and an accountable owner.

In monday.com, you can organise these key results on an OKR board, making it easier to see who is responsible for each outcome, where progress currently stands and what still needs to happen.

The aim is to move beyond simply stating what you want to achieve and establish a practical way to measure whether you are getting there.

2. Connect your key results to the projects that drive them

Once your key results are defined, the next step is connecting them to the projects that will help deliver those outcomes.

This is where many businesses lose visibility. Objectives might be tracked in one place, while project updates, deadlines and progress reports sit somewhere else. Teams end up switching between systems, manually gathering information and trying to piece together the bigger picture.

Connecting your OKR board to your project boards in monday.com can help bring that information together.

Using a Connect Boards column, you can link individual projects to the key results they support. A Mirror column can then display relevant project information, such as its current status, alongside the associated key result.

This gives you a clearer view of how operational work contributes to strategic objectives without constantly jumping between boards.

It also makes it easier to identify gaps. If a key result has no projects connected to it, that is an early warning sign. Your team may have agreed on the outcome but not yet identified the work required to achieve it.

Spotting that gap early gives you an opportunity to assign the right projects, review priorities and make adjustments before it affects your overall progress.

3. Break projects down into milestones and manageable tasks

Knowing which projects support your objectives is important, but successful execution depends on understanding what needs to happen next.

Projects need structure, milestones need dates, and tasks need clear ownership.

Once a project has been linked to a key result, break it down into meaningful milestones. Assign each milestone an owner and a target date so that everyone understands what needs to be delivered and when.

From there, use subitems to organise the individual tasks required to complete each milestone. Give each task its own owner and due date, creating a clear chain of accountability from the project level down to the work being completed by individual team members.

This structure helps answer some essential questions:

  • What needs to happen next?

  • Who is responsible for delivering it?

  • When does it need to be completed?

  • Which milestone or project does it support?

  • How does that work contribute to the wider business objective?

When these connections are visible, teams have a better understanding of how their work fits into the overall plan. Managers can monitor progress more effectively, while leadership teams gain greater confidence that strategic priorities are translating into tangible action.

Most importantly, problems become easier to spot. Delayed tasks, missed milestones and projects falling behind can be identified before they have a significant impact on the key results they support.

4. Make visibility part of your Q4 planning

As you prepare for the final quarter of the year, it is worth reviewing whether your objectives are supported by realistic plans and measurable progress.

A strong OKR framework is not simply a reporting exercise. It should help your team make better decisions about priorities, capacity and accountability.

Before finalising your Q4 objectives, bring your team together and ask a few important questions.

Do we have the capacity?

Are the people responsible for delivering each objective realistically able to take on the required work? Consider existing commitments, competing priorities and potential resource constraints before setting deadlines.

Is ownership clear?

Does every key result, project, milestone and task have someone accountable for moving it forward? Shared responsibility can be useful, but without clear ownership, important work can easily fall through the cracks.

Can we measure progress?

Are your key results tied to meaningful measures, and can you see how the projects supporting them are progressing? If you cannot easily establish whether you are on track, it may be time to revisit how your objectives are structured.

Can we trace the work back to the goal?

Choose a key result and follow the chain from the outcome you want to achieve, through the projects supporting it, to the milestones and tasks required to deliver them. If you encounter a gap, investigate whether the work has been properly planned, assigned or connected.

These checks can help you identify weaknesses in your plan before they become problems during the quarter.

5. Turn your strategy into something your team can act on

Your annual goals should be more than numbers on a dashboard or statements in a planning document. They should inform the decisions your team makes every day.

By connecting objectives, key results, projects, milestones and tasks in monday.com, you can create a clearer relationship between what the business wants to achieve and the work required to get there.

This does not mean adding more layers of administration. It means creating a structure that gives people the information they need, makes accountability clearer and helps leaders understand where attention is required.

When everything is connected, you spend less time chasing updates and piecing together reports, and more time identifying opportunities, addressing risks and helping your team deliver meaningful results.

And that is particularly valuable in Q4, when priorities compete for attention and there is less time to recover from delays.
