Hiring a young worker may feel like a bit of a gamble. I took it and am delighted I did. My young worker is smart, talented, enthusiastic and eager to learn. She is also hard working – despite all of the other pressures in her life (she’s doing finals as we speak) - and always gives 100%.
It is true that she doesn’t yet have a lot of experience, but I would much rather help her to gain that experience than have to work with someone to ‘undo’ all of their bad habits.
And yes, it’s time consuming – but what employee worth employing is not time-consuming!
In the current job market, we cannot afford to overlook the skills and abilities young workers can bring to an organisation. We have to be prepared to be patient, invest in them, open up a vision of a bright future for them – and try to bridge the gap between their life experiences and ours.
Whether you like it or not, young people of today are the leaders of tomorrow – and many of them are already leading us. We neglect them needlessly and risk missing the fascinating and inspiring insights they bring.
My young leader, Cosmo, is fascinating and inspiring. Everything crossed for your exams and, by the way, you passed your probation period!
