Yin Yoga for Stress & Anxiety *Free online…

Feeling locked In?

Im not sure how you guys have found it, but lockdown definitely has its testing days. With constant impending deadlines in both work & personal life, frustrating thought patterns, a constant need to be more efficient & effective, quicker, faster, too much social media, all can lead to feeling absolutely rung out. 

Although working from home has had many benefits, no commute, you can take Zoom meetings in your pyjamas (bottom half!), it may have also led to more pressurised thinking, difficult decisions making, more multi-tasking, change, uncertainty.  Also that feeling of having no cut off point to your day, the days can roll in. I’m still living in flight or fight mode, which I wonder whether has become a habit, something that has become the norm in busy city living.  Pre lockdown life had me running between classes from early in the morning until late at night & an evening yin class soon become part of my daily routine, to restore my energy, reset & re-energise, so I was good to go again the next day, doing what I love. Its truly the most beautiful practice. 


What is Yin yoga?  How can it free you up?

Yin yoga, where the breath is slow and steady, the postures are held longer (between 3-5 minutes) allows the connective tissue in the body to stretch. This still & quiet practice is a great anti-dote to busy living giving us some much needed balance.  It provides the space to breathe, process and deeply relax. 

The practice always elevates my mood, leaves me less anxious, mentally resilient & calm. Leaving the mat with a clear head, I often find it a great time to make decisions or firm up any changes that need to be made. 


How does this happen exactly…

The flight or fight mode I referred to earlier, is the physical response the body has to stress. Adrenaline is produced to boost mental & physical alertness, the breath gets quicker & the heart rate increases. Of course, in short bursts this can be really helpful, but if prolonged, these stress signals can leave you feeling in a constant state of anxiety, the extra cortisol released in the body can damage blood vessels, increase blood pressure & lead to a build up of fat, as well as skin irritations, which I’ve noticed in the past. Yin yoga lights up the para sympathetic nervous system which counteracts the fight & flight response. The blood flow is re-directed back to the digestive & reproductive organs, allowing the body to heal, rest & digest.  Nutrients are extracted from food more effectively, the immune system is strengthened, inflammation & cortisol levels are reduced. 


Expect to leave the class calm, nourished & deeply relaxed.

Overall for me, yin has helped to restore all the energy I’ve expelled during the day, my skin is better, my mind clearer, I feel more myself. It’s truly is a wonderful way to end the day.
